How Adam juggles fulfilling legal work with life passions
LOD lawyer Adam has found the holy grail - interesting, fulfilling work that still gives him time for the things that matter to him - family, travel, and time for his own ventures.
Can you please introduce yourself and tell us about your current secondment?
I’m Adam, an Australian lawyer based in Dubai. My last secondment was with the digital and tech legal team at one of the UAE’s largest retail groups. I was brought in to support a broad range of digital partnerships, IT strategy, and tech-driven projects across their retail business. It was a great experience - I worked closely with different teams on some high-impact projects, from retail tech rollouts to major hospitality and F&B collaborations. The team was fantastic, and I felt like I was able to make a real contribution, which made the work even more rewarding.
What attracted you to the Lawyers On Demand model?
The flexibility, 100%. I wanted a model that let me stay involved in interesting legal work, but still have time for the things that matter to me - family, travel, and my own ventures. LOD gives you that balance. You get the structure and support of a legal career, without the rigidity of a traditional setup.
How has Lawyers On Demand supported you in your career and your life?
LOD has made it possible to stay connected to great legal work while still giving me the space to build a life outside of it. I’ve had the flexibility to take on work that interests me, step back when I’ve needed to, and focus on other priorities. It’s helped me shape a career that actually fits around my life.
What has been your experience working with Lawyers On Demand clients?
Really positive. LOD clients are usually looking for someone who can hit the ground running and add value from day one. There’s a strong level of trust from the start, and you’re given the space to contribute in a meaningful way. Your advice is taken seriously, and you feel like you're there for a reason - not just ticking boxes.
What is the best thing about being a Lawyers On Demand secondee lawyer?
You get variety without the chaos. Each secondment brings something different, but it’s always aligned with your background and strengths. There’s a clear purpose, and you’re supported to do your best work. You keep learning, but it never feels overwhelming or unmanageable.
How does Lawyers On Demand support you to achieve other goals/parts of life?
LOD gives you room to move. I’ve been able to travel, spend more time with family, work on my own projects in between roles, and even pick up new skills - most recently skiing! All while staying active in the legal space. That kind of balance is rare, and something I really value about LOD.
What additional benefits has the Lawyers On Demand model provided you with in your career that you may not have obtained elsewhere?
Definitely the exposure. You get the chance to work with some incredible businesses across a range of sectors - big and small. The model has opened doors to different kinds of work and challenges and helped me diversify my experience in ways I probably wouldn’t have in a single long-term in-house role.
What advice would you give to new Lawyers On Demand lawyers starting out or someone who may want to change their career trajectory?
Be open to the experience. Say yes to the right opportunities, and back yourself - you’re there for a reason. The model works best when you’re adaptable and take ownership of the work, but also when you make the most of the freedom that comes with it. It’s a great way to build a career that actually works for you, not just the other way around.
